Urban Landscape: Tom Manley Research

Continuing my research on Urban Landscape, I will be looking further into another photographer  in this post.

Tom Manley

‘A silent anchor to Govan’s industrial memories’
(Manley, no date)

The images above are from a collection series by Tom Manley, a city landscape photographer who captures all kinds of architecture and focuses on urban landscape. In this series, he included images of the district Govan in the city of Glasgow. He mentions that what is left of these magnificent ruins from the age of shipbuilding has been abandoned and isolated from the city for far too long, resonating to another place and time. Nature has taken hold in an extensive amount of wilderness that has been released from development's hold. This environment is vulnerable and has to be reconnected with the city and river to which it belongs.

Seeing the pictures above, I can see that Manley was trying to capture how nature has taken over the ruins from the era of shipbuilding in Govan. Capturing this moment can symbolise how the ruins have been abandoned and lost touch with the reality of the city, Glasgow. In the second picture, he used/edited using a black and white filter thus creating an image that enhances the shadows and the sky. I like this technique and will most likely use it when I do the Urban Landscape photography session.
