Creating an Advertisement: Ideas and Initial Research

For this advertisement work, I chose softball as my theme. I will be creating an advertisement poster for a softball beginner's trial targeted mainly for young girls and their parents. The idea behind it is to encourage these young girls to try a new and different sport aside from just football, and basketball. Though softball is a sport that uses a lot of mentality, it certainly is a fun sport to play. According to (healthfitnessrevolution.com, 2015), playing softball provides total body conditioning skills as it is an activity that requires multiple skills. Other than gaining upper body development, anaerobic benefits and strengths, playing softball can also help increase your mentality and self-esteem along with being taught how to work in a team and develop leadership skills.

To help me gain inspiration to create my advert, I will look at existing adverts and study them.

This advert is for a softball and baseball summer camp by All Stars Academy. The background is an animated version of the field along with stage lights, giving a grand feeling. The logo uses an eye-catching font and the use of images about the activity is a beneficial way to know what it is about. The message they wanted to convey was shown extremely well with the amount of information the creator gave. The targeted audience are parents with young children that would enjoy a summer camp all about softball and baseball or that just want to try out something new. The targeted audience can also be for teenagers, as seen on the images provided.

This is a workshop advert by the Softball NSW Coaches Academy. It is titled 'Throwing Workshop' which means the workshop will be focusing mainly on different techniques on how to throw in Softball. The message they wanted to send out was conveyed from the information they wrote for the audience. The design layout is quite simple but clean and does not disrupt your eyes of overly filled writing, only writing the important information along with the choice of colours. The use of famous athletes as presenters are a method for obtaining attention. The logo is an appropriate size as it does not cover a vast amount of space in the advert. The targeted audience for this advert would be for coaches of a softball team, a softball athlete in-training, and/or parents of softball athletes. As seen written on the advert "Innovative Techniques from the USA and Australian National Teams to Advance your Athletes!", it is mainly targeting coaches and parents of softball athletes.

Differences:
The first advert mainly targets younger children and mid-teens as their advert is more colourful and eye-catching for interested parents and children compared to the second advert. The second advert seems to be more mature on the design layout and mainly targets adults such as coaches and older in-training softball athletes.

What I would take and use from the adverts above:
I like how the colour red is an eye-catching colour for an advert especially for sports. The placements of the logo is also in a convenient size and place, along with the use of the images of the athletes to attract audience who are familiar with the sport.

What I have learnt:
I have learned that for workshop adverts, it requires more information to be put on the poster. Depending on the targeted audience, the choice of your design layout and how you interpret the information matters a lot. Let's say, if you have too much writing, no one would be interested in your advert as it will feel more like a book instead of an advert.
